Hanoi is experiencing the coldest rain of the year so far (it's only about 8 or 9 degrees outside), so I'm sitting here writing a little about swing for you all. Please read this for reference only, consider carefully before using, and welcome constructive criticism. .
In the previous article, I wrote about the most common aspects of the lower body (legs and hips) during the downswing. In this article, I go into more detail, especially... The first phase of the downswing is called the "weight shift," also known as the "lateral move" or "hip shift."
1. What is hip sway? In the previous article, I mentioned that the horizontal rhythm during backswing and downswing is “SHIFT – TURN – SHIFT – TURN” (where the shift rhythm starts first, followed by the turn). The shift rhythm is essentially the “hip sway” (the movement of the hip center horizontally), swaying the hips to the right during the backswing and then to the left during the downswing (this description is only for right-handed people). for unification)!
2. Why do we have to sift? Why do we have to shift and then turn instead of turning?
The answer is “initial inertia” – initial momentum!
I'll use the example of a motorcycle/car accelerating from 0-100km/h so you can easily visualize it. From a standstill, the first thing you need to do is shift to 1st gear (strongest engine) to start the car moving, immediately after the car has momentum, you will shift to 2nd gear, then 3rd, then 4th gear and accelerate to quickly accelerate to 100km/h. No one would start a car and then shift back to gear 4 to rev the engine, right? (Yet I still see amateurs doing that, it's heartbreaking).
Here, gear 1 is the hip shift phase, using very large and strong muscles like the calves, thighs, glutes… Gear 2 is the start of hip rotation, gear 3 is chest rotation, gear 4 is arm rotation…etc…
3. So how much shift is enough? Even professionals have different levels of shift, some shift less, some shift more. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this?
The amount of shift to the right/left during the backswing and downswing depends on the speed and timing of your swing! Each swing will have its own parameters. To know how much sieve is enough, the first thing you need to understand is how much initial breath is required. For example, when the backswing is a slow motion, you need less initial momentum, so you swing very little. But when the downswing is at high speed, you need to generate more initial momentum, meaning you swing more.
Another parameter affecting the amplitude and duration of hip swing is muscle strength. This is why we see professional golfers swinging very little but still generating a lot of initial momentum, while amateurs tend to swing with more wobbling and swaying because their muscles are weaker and less efficient. more. 4. Thus, hip swaying is clearly necessary, especially for beginners and amateurs, to create a more powerful and smoother swing (have you noticed that swaying makes it much easier to swing than standing still and rotating?), it must be affirmed that this is natural and necessary! HOWEVER!!! Conversely, hip swing also has negative effects on swing quality, most importantly impacting stability at impact! (the most important thing for professionals). The more hip swing you do, the more wobble and instability the spin axis/rotation axis becomes, causing the swing to become unstable as well (both in terms of in-out direction and the lowpoint of the clubface). Therefore, when observing a professional swing, it's very clean, stable, and has minimal hip sway because they effectively utilize their muscles and movements to minimize swaying while still generating enough initial momentum for subsequent acceleration! Finally, I agree with Dr. Kwon: “Be bold and sway your hips; it's the natural way to create a smooth swing. Instinct will guide you on how to generate initial momentum for the movement! As you improve, gradually reduce the horizontal rhythm and increase the vertical rhythm!” Note: - The hip swaying process can be observed through the CoM and CoP motion graphs in Dr. Kwon's work, but I won't include them here to avoid discouraging amateurs. If anyone needs them, inbox me and I'll send you the images (teeth). - This article cannot comprehensively cover all the advantages and disadvantages of hip thrust, especially failing to mention its significant impact on upper body movement and club trajectory.
- Wishing you all good health and enjoyment with golf. Dr. Qwon
