The specifications of a golf club determine its suitability or unsuitability for use. However, many golfers, when choosing clubs, do not recognize the importance of golf club specifications, and therefore choose the wrong clubs for themselves.
A standard set of golf clubs includes 12 clubs, consisting of 3 woods (wood 1, wood 3, wood 5), 8 irons (3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, PW), and 1 putter. Each club has different specifications, and based on those specifications, players will choose the right golf club for themselves.
Specifications of Wood Golf Clubs Wood clubs are clubs used for teeing off and hitting long shots on the fairway. The number 1 wood, also known as the Driver, has a loft of 7 to 12 degrees. Professional golfers typically use drivers with a loft of 8.5 to 10 degrees, while beginners use drivers with a loft of 10 degrees or more. The standard length for men's drivers is 44 inches (steel shaft) and 44.5 inches (graphite shaft).
Next are the 3-wood and 5-wood, which are usually hit second from the fairway. The 3-wood has a loft of 15-18 degrees, and the 5-wood has a loft of 20-22 degrees. The 3-wood is usually 1/2 inch shorter than the driver and has a similar ratio to the 5-wood. The shorter the length of the club, the smaller the arc, resulting in a slower swing speed and shorter ball distance. The longer the club, the faster the clubhead speed, but it becomes more difficult to control the club consistently, making it harder to make consistent contact with the ball.
Iron clubs are used when you hit the ball 200 yards away from the green. The closer the ball is to the green, the higher the iron number you should use. Iron sets are usually marked with both letters and numbers. A basic set of 8 clubs is marked with the numbers 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and Pitching Wedge (PW). Among them, the PW club is a special iron; it has the highest loft angle in the iron set and the lowest in the technical club set.
The PW club has a loft angle of approximately 48 degrees. The next wedge increases in degree by 4 degrees, equivalent to 48, 52, 56, 60, and 64. There is also a special type of wedge called the Last Wedge, 68 degrees.
In the iron set, the 3 and 4 are the most difficult to hit, while the 7 and 9 are the easiest. Therefore, beginners should practice hitting the 7 iron first.
Putter specifications
Pedge specifications The putter is about 33 – 35 inches long. There are two common types of putters: Blade and Mallet, also known by professionals as heel-balanced putters and face-balanced putters. In which: - A putter with heel balance has its total weight concentrated on the tail end of the heel, and the heel is lowered to create an angle of approximately 45 degrees. - A putter with face balance has the main part of its weight concentrated on the face of the club, and the heel is only lowered to about 15 degrees when balanced. Weight is usually indicated on the shaft, ranging from 50 grams to 130 grams. Golfers with fast clubhead speeds often want to buy a heavier set of clubs. New golfers or women will prefer lighter shafts.
Lighter shafts reduce clubhead speed but provide a more solid feel and easier control, making them more suitable for physically strong golfers.
Shaft stiffness, also known as shaft flex, is categorized into five grades: Extra Stiff, Stiff, Regular, and Senior & Ladies. Golf clubs are designated by the corresponding letters X, S, R, A, and L (sometimes A and L are considered the same).
The above are all the basic golf club specifications that anyone wanting to play golf needs to know in order to choose the most suitable club from the available types of golf clubs to maximize their potential. Hopefully, this article helps readers have a better understanding of this noble sport.
