West Lakes Golf & Villas is about 60 km from the center of Ho Chi Minh City. We followed Highway 22, crossed the Cu Chi town overpass for a while and then turned left onto a small road. Leaving behind the noisy streets, the car took us through the countryside in a peaceful setting.

More than 1.5 hours after departure, the field appeared before our eyes, located in Duc Hoa district, Long An province, near Cu Chi district, Ho Chi Minh City.

EVERY GOLF HOLE HAS A WATER TRAP

Designed by Thomson Perrett (which has successfully designed more than 250 projects worldwide), West Lakes is an 18-hole, par 72 golf course, measuring more than 7,100 yards from the farthest tee. Overall, the course appears to be built on a swamp. As the name suggests, every hole has a water hazard. In other words, water traps are a “specialty” at West Lakes.

The golf courses sometimes run along the melaleuca forest, sometimes are cut across by lakes and creeks. From the tee, along the fairway or when the ball has entered the hole, players can enjoy the rustic countryside scenery. Their eyes are somewhat softened by the green of the grass and native flowers and leaves, then suddenly brightened by the yellow grass.

Setting foot on the first fairway, a player in our group commented: “This course is like a swamp, the fairway surface seems soft but turns out to be hard.”

The fairways of the golf courses at West Lakes are paved with Zeon Zoysia grass. This is one of the few courses that uses a type of grass that is having a positive impact on the course design and construction industry.

Zeon Zoysia at West Lakes grows inward on most of the fairways. They make it difficult for golfers to contact the ball. In general, the fairways of the course are generous with landing space but in return are dangerous sand traps. Meanwhile, the shape of many water hazards deceives the player's vision. If not alert, golfers will "lose the ball and waste strokes on the scoreboard".

The green surface is planted with Bermuda TifEagle grass, smooth as velvet. According to our research, this grass species not only ensures technical standards, aesthetics but also has biological characteristics suitable for the Southern climate. Although the shape is not very unique, the greens at West Lakes are difficult enough for golfers with their slopes, rolling directions... and slippery grass areas that make the ball go out of control.

SOME MEMORABLE GOLF HOLES

Hole No. 1, par 4, 395 yards from the blue tee: This is a relatively difficult starting point because there are sand and water traps on both sides. If the tee shot is straight, a little over 250 yards, towards the two bunkers on the right side of the fairway, the player will have a spacious landing area and then onto the green from a distance of about 135 yards. Other options are still available, but in general, once the ball is well hit and in a good position, the player will not have to enter the game with a heavy mentality.

Hole 7, par 5, 573 yards, from the blue tee: This is a golf course that requires a long, patient approach. Trouble lurks everywhere. Players need to hit the ball accurately to avoid the sand traps on both sides of the fairway, before clearing the water hazard on the second shot. Not to mention the need for a precise approach shot to reach the relatively small green.

Hole 8, par 3, 140 yards from the blue tee: Stepping onto the tee of this hole, players must surely think of the infamous island green at TPC Sawgrass at The Players Championship, which is considered one of the most difficult in the world. Although it cannot be compared, at West Lakes, golfers need to exert reasonable force to avoid sending the ball into the seemingly “frictionless” area behind the green.

Hole 13, par 4, 352 yards from the blue tee: This golf hole is "photogenic". Just past the tee box, there are two lakes right in front of the fairway, almost touching the tramway. At the other end of the fairway, there is another lake that cuts across, leaving only a small area to land the ball, right in front of the green, which is surrounded by 5 sand traps on both sides. To deal with this place, golfers need to choose a club that is suitable for their strength.

Hole 17, par 3, 162 yards from the blue tee: Players hit the ball over the lake to reach a raised target. The green slopes from front to back, making it more difficult than it looks. Therefore, golfers should not hit the ball too far to avoid hitting the grass and causing the ball to roll out of control.

Currently, West Lakes Golf & Villas has an 18-hole course, the facilities are inseparable and will have 9 more holes in the near future. According to the plan, the main investor, C.S.Q International Investment Joint Stock Company, will deploy the villa and residential area project in 2019.
